The Micro Tunnelling Project at Pipavav, Gujarat – a critical marine infrastructure initiative executed with precision to overcome extreme hydrostatic pressure and ensure uninterrupted progress under challenging coastal conditions.

Client Details
  • PROJECT NAME: MICRO TUNNELLING PROJECT
  • PROJECT LOCATION: PIPAVAV, GUJARAT
  • CLIENT: COMECO
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
  • During the construction of a micro tunnel by Micro Boring Machine at approx. 60M from the sea line. The tunnel was being excavated through overburden having stiff soil comprising a sandy silt matrix.
  • The presence of water-saturated media causes a difficult situation to excavate the tunnel due to an additional increase in the hydrostatic pressure.
FIELD CONDITION
  • The crack appeared on the wall, allowing seawater to permeate inside the micro tunnel and eventually leading to a huge water inrush of 200-350 L/m.
  • The client has applied multiple approach to seal the crack of the micro tunnel but failed every time due to immense pressure of the ground water.
CHALLENGES
  • Continuous water inflow halts the work activity and delays the project.
  • Grouting execution to be done under heavy water inflow.

Specialised techniques such as precision grouting, controlled dewatering, and advanced sealing solutions were integrated to counteract extreme hydrostatic pressure and continuous seawater ingress. This strategic approach not only ensured structural stability but also maintained operational continuity, delivering a resilient solution under highly challenging marine conditions.
